Strategies to manage feelings of overwhelm.

If you find yourself asking “how do I stop feeling overwhelmed?” then trust that you’re not alone.

Our lives are busier than ever and we are constantly getting pulled in different directions. There are so many things that can attribute to making us feel stressed; including, work responsibilities, relationships, financial worries, political issues, environmental factors, health concerns and living in a pandemic like we have been! The past two years, living through Covid, has seen a huge impact on our mental health and how we react and cope in situations. In the social media business, I can only speak from experience and what has worked or hasn’t worked for me. Here are some things I’ve learned.

Accept that these feelings come and go

It’s important to remember it’s not permanent and it is totally fine to feel the way you feel. We are only human and our emotions come in waves.

Try breathing exercises

Breathing exercises are really good for anxiety. Find a quiet spot or pop your earphones in and focus on your breath. For me, I like doing deep breathing if I’m feeling really stressed.

Relax your tummy.

Place one hand just beneath the ribs.

Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose for 4 seconds, noticing the hand rise.

Breathe out through the mouth for 8 seconds, noticing your hand fall.

Take breaks and practice mindfulness

When you plan out your day, allocating time without your phone. Whether you can fit in 15 mins or an hour. As long as it’s time without your phone to breathe, go for a walk, do some yoga or eat your lunch. You’ll be surprised how much more productive and focused you’ll be without constant buzzing of notifications and calls.

Make time to do what you enjoy

If you are just grinding through each day trying to cross off all the tasks on your to-do list before the day ends - you’re going to feel more stressed.

Make it a point to set the time aside to bring joy into your life. What brings you happiness?

For me:

Going for a walk and listening to music or a podcast

Cooking a healthy dinner

Practicing yoga

Spending quality times with loved ones

Watching a really good movie or tv show with my husband (no phones allowed)

Consume a healthy and balanced diet

Diet plays a huge role in our emotions and consequently how we react to certain situations. Same goes for our minds. If we aren’t getting our proteins, iron, fibre etc, our brains don’t function to their full focus capacity. So, essentially our feelings of overwhelm come from within. Take this as a chance to look at your diet and see what you can reduce /include more of. There are lots of sites that can help you figure out of your diet contains enough good stuff!
